Do you think teen AIDs rates going up 203 persons nationwide deserves to be Yahoos top headline?

According to data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for 2001 to 2005 (the latest years available), the number of new cases of HIV infection diagnosed among 15-to-19-year-olds in the United States rose from 1,010 in 2001, held steady for the next three years, then jumped 20 percent in 2005, to 1,213 cases.
Yes, I do. Frankly, and HIV coverage on Yahoo is a plus — there simply is no where near enough coverage as it is.
The issue with HIV is that a person can have no symptoms for up to 10 years or longer. So a person who presents with asymptomatic HIV disease at 25, 30, 35 was probably infected when they were a teenager/young adult. This is an issue. We won’t really know the extent of HIV’s hold on our youth until we increase HIV testing options for youth
The fact is most teens are not getting tested for HIV. So this increase is very important. It may be giving us a hint as to a major problem that we are not aware of
The perfect niche environment exists among our youth today
- higher rates of other STIs (which increases the risk of acquiring/transmitting HIV many times over)
-obviously unsafe sex
- not enough education in schools about safer sex, condom negotitiation, and healthy sexuality.
All this together is HIV’s perfect niche environment. Even if it hasn’t already taken hold, with HIV you give it an inch…..
