Ok so Health Care… (Both sides please)?
Both sides really have no clue what is in the bill. Both sides agree that health care reform is needed but do not exactly like everything about this bill. If you could write the entire bill for Health Care what would YOU put in it?
Opinions are what we’re going for but statistics and news articles are welcome because they really emphasize your point =)
- Phase out the failing government funded health care options that already exist. Leave them in place long enough for those who planned around them to receive them, but have younger wage earners plan for health care in retirement alternatively in the free market.
- Open up competition and risk pools in the health insurance industry by permitting competition across state lines.
- Place limits on jury awards for malpractice and enact stiff penalties for fraudulent or insignificant claims. By default, this would reduce the cost of malpractice insurance for providers and reduce the costs of practicing medicine, thus reduce costs for patients. The other benefit would be that practitioners would back off of ordering as many unnecessary tests. Countless tests are ordered every day in this country for no reason other than to cover a physician’s butt in the event of a lawsuit. They know they’re unnecessary when they order them.
- Promote the idea of graduated health policies based on risk. In other words, encourage young healthy people to have low cost major medical coverage and contribute heavily to tax free health savings plans to cover routine care. By the time those people are older and fall into a higher risk category, they can increase their policy coverage and move into a higher risk pool. But, they will have built a healthy enough cushion in their health savings accounts to handle higher deductibles but still be covered in part by their insurance provider.
- Get pharma under control and regulate/limit marketing more closely. Tons of prescriptions are written every day just because patients demand them. They see ads that promote a drug as a miracle cure for them and encourage them to ask their doctor for a prescription. I’m a firm believer in people taking control of their own health care decisions, but nobody should be encouraged to ask their doctor for a drug. We’re over medicated and it’s partially our own fault that we’re taking pills to counteract the side effects of our pills.
Those are but a few steps that could be taken to solve our health care dilemma without adding more government taxpayer funded programs. There is much more we could do without surrendering our personal liberties.
